About

DUCKS FARM SHOP

Duck’s Farm Shop was founded in 2016 by the Worsley family who moved to the area in 2012, taking over The King’s Arms in the village. Upon a tour of the village on their first day, looking for milk and bread, they realised there was not a shop that served the local community.  At the time there was a Garage on the site that Duck’s Farm Shop now stands, owned by the Old family.

About six months after the Worsley’s moved into The Kings Arms pub (just 200 yards from Duck’s), the Garage subsequently shut its doors for the last time.  The family just knew it was the perfect opportunity and site for a Farm Shop.  They had built up good relationships with local farmers and food producers through their work at the pub, and new the village desperately needed this vital community resource.

However, the Worsley’s also had a clear vision.  They didn’t want Duck’s Farm Shop to be like any other in Dorset.  They wanted to create a community, supporting local farmers and producers as well as bringing the very best of national and international produce.  It was also essential to have a café serving the fresh and tasty food to the local community; somewhere to meet with locals and chat over a coffee and slice of cake.

It is crucial to the Worsley’s that their staff were to be passionate and knowledgeable about the produce sold and take the time to get to know their regulars; suggesting items they know our regulars will just love.

And since 2016 to now… all of the staff at Duck’s are involved in the sourcing of our produce, and we regularly audit our stock to make sure that it is relevant and meets our high standards of quality.  You can be sure that when you shop with Duck’s, you will get great advice, personal service and be able to take a slice of Dorset home with you.

FARM SHOP AND PANTRY

Duck’s Farm Shop prides itself on sourcing the highest quality Dorset produce from local farms.  You will find everything you need here to make a tasty and nutritious home-cooked meal.

We have meat from the Jurassic Coast, eggs from Sherborne, and jams, condiments and chutneys from local artisan producers (which pair just perfectly with our Dorset cheeses).

Our sausages and bacon are particularly prized by our café customers, as once they have been tried in the café, most people can’t resist taking a pack or two home with them!

We have a wide selection of seasonal fruit and vegetables from local farms.  The reason we are so passionate about sourcing from local farms is that it reduces our food miles and ensures that your fruit and veg are the freshest they can be.

For all this fantastic Dorset produce and much much more, why not come into our Farm Shop.  Come and say hello to all the staff and get some recommendations and inspiration.  We taste and select all of our products to make sure that it lives up to our and our customers’ high expectations, ensuring you the very best in a ‘taste of Dorset’.

DELI AND CHEESEMONGERS

At Duck’s Farm Shop Deli and Cheesemongers, we bring you the very best cheeses and deli items from Dorset and around the world.

We have carefully curated an excellent selection of local Dorset cheeses to complement and enhance one another on your cheeseboard.  We have many local cheeses, but one of our team’s favourites have to be the Dorset Blue Vinney, from Woodbridge Farm just outside Sturminster Newton, Dorset.  It is an artisan, hand-made blue cheese and just delicious whipped up into cheesy scones, or in a toasted cheese sandwich with warmed pears and honey.  A favourite of our manager is the Dorset Red.  She loves this smoked red cheese thinly shaved over a purple sprouting broccoli salad with a poached egg on top.  Delicious!

For our deli meats, we have looked to the finest International charcuterie, including spicy chorizo, and delectable Napoli Salami.  Our meats can be sliced to your specified thickness, so you always have the perfectly sliced charcuterie on your cheeseboard.

If you do manage to knock up the perfect cheese and charcuterie board at a dinner party make sure you tag us in your pictures on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter #DucksFarmShopDeli

WINES, CIDERS, BEERS AND SPIRITS

One of our most exciting ranges is our wide selection of Dorset wines, beers, ciders and spirits.  These are the products that have made a name for themselves both nationally and internationally – so you can be sure that they are world-class.

We are proud to support the burgeoning English wine industry, stocking wine made by the eponymous Stephen Spurrier, (of Bottle Shock infamy) from Bride Valley Wines in Bridport.

We also have a wide selection of beers and ciders from very well established breweries in Dorset.  These include such favourites as Dorset Nectar who produce award-winning artisan ciders from Dorset apples and The Dorset Brewery Company, Cerne Abbas Brewery, Palmers and Sandbanks, who all are brewing up fantastic ales.

Finally, we have an extensive range of local spirits, including Conker Gin which boasts they “have a ruthless focus on quality, creating innovative spirits handcrafted in Dorset’s first gin distillery”.  We can certainly recommend their Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur which our manager says she is partial to in an espresso martini.

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

Since the start of the pandemic, local services has been of enormous importance, particularly in rural areas. We are very proud of how Duck’s and its team supported and adapted to this demand, and we’ve had fantastic feedback and support from the local community.  A real positive to come out of this year is the harmony of rural communities supporting each other.

That is why, here at Duck’s, we like to think of ourselves as the heart of the Portesham community.  We have invested in expanding our convenience section to include household staples such as refillable washing up liquid, fabric washing liquid and conditioner as well as soaps and hair products.  We have also expanded our offerings of loose goods such as nuts, seeds and dried fruits and have added even more local produce from Dorset suppliers.  We hope the balance of our essential items, along with speciality Dorset produce, will mean that Duck’s Farm Shop is your one-stop-shop for your weekly shop.

Our delivery service, which proved so popular during the lockdown, is still going strong.  You can see details of it on our separate Home Delivery page.
